Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has promised that, if elected in 2023, his administration will put a stop to the ongoing strikes that pose a threat to the nation's federal universities.
Obi also promised to enhance educational spending, give colleges more autonomy, and provide loans to students while speaking at a town hall meeting with young people in Port Harcourt.
He also stated that under his presidency, pupils would not remain in schools past the end of their degree.
I won't let them extend your stay to 8 years for a 5-year course, he declared. It will always be five years. It is between myself and ASUU if I have a problem. We shouldn't make you suffer because of our disagreement.
The former governor of Anambra State argued that universities should be permitted to manage their resources so they are not forced to shut down as a solution to break the current impasse between the government and university administrators.
"So many things don't make sense, but I'll sit down with ASUU and we'll talk about it.
The LP presidential candidate remarked that administrations that refuse to acknowledge the impact of education on growth are doomed, adding that he would go on physical visits to tertiary institutions to make them operate.
"I promise to visit at least 10 universities annually when I'm president. When I served as governor of Anambra, I visited more than 500 secondary schools. And I deal directly with all of their school prefects; they all have my phone number," he said.
"In my manifesto, I promised to enhance money for education. We will spend money on education because it is the best investment a society can make. A society is more developed the more educated it is.
While the human infrastructure, education has not been created, you still talk about physical infrastructure. Therefore, he highlighted, "We will finance tertiary education through partnerships, the government will supply the money, and we can also get some firms to support and we will offer student loans.
Obi emphasised that his government will be led by young people and women, with the older generation serving as advisors and mentors who would be respected. According to independent report.
