 The Supreme Court has ruled that the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes remain legal tender till December 31, 2023. This is one of the rulings of the nation’s apex court on Friday, March 3, 2023.  The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, did not win enough votes to make him president, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate  Atiku Abubakar said yesterday. The duo were contenders in last Saturday’s presidential election that was won by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Obi got 6, 101,533 from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, said on Thursday that he believed his former ally-turned-opponent, Peter Obi, could not have won Saturday’s presidential election. Atiku said Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party, could not have got the constitutionally-required spread needed to be declared president. Apart from winning the majority votes, a candidate is also expected to get 25 per cent of votes in at least 25 states to be declared the winner of the presidential election.  The Minister of Works and Housing, and the former governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola have reacted after President Muhammadu Buhari defied the Supreme Court order on allowing the old notes to be legal tender for the next six months.  With barely eleven days to the general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disclosed that Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) cashless policy may hinder the Commission’s ability to conduct the election.  INEC FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Yahaya Bello, made this known at the North-Central Stakeholders Roundtable on the 2023 General Elections which was organized by the the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) in Abuja, yesterday.   “As we are seated here, 99 percent of us are affected by the cashless policy. INEC is also affected. We have 2,822,000 polling units. Before the election day, we are going to employ the services of vehicle providers. The Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara State governments have filed a lawsuit against the Federal Government before the Supreme Court, seeking a restraining order to halt the full implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s naira redesign policy. The lawsuit follows the chaos and hardship that Nigerians go through in efforts to meet the deadline for the new naira exchange. In a motion ex-parte filed on their behalf by their lawyer, AbdulHakeem Uthman Mustapha (SAN), the Northern States urged the Supreme Court to give them an interim injunction stopping the Nigerian Government either by itself or acting through the CBN, commercial banks or its agents from executing its plan of ending the timeframe within which the now older currencies of 200, 500 and 1000 denomination will cease to be legal tenders.  The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against excessive fasting, saying it affects the kidney. Director-general of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who gave the warning at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, said “We are a very religious country, Muslims and Christians, we fast a lot, and it is part of the kidney problem. She said the body is supposed to have homeostasis balance, meaning the water level in your body must be enough to make the organs to function. “Some people will fast for 10, 20 days without drinking a lot of water. The kidney is being punished. “Now, if you put chemicals in it, it triples in an exponential manner, with damage to the kidneys. This is because the kidney does not have enough water to dilute and filter  Adeyeye added. She, therefore, urged Nigerians to fast with “common sense” and to always buy medications from pharmacies against buying from hawkers and corner shops.

 Indication emerged on Tuesday that the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will deliver judgement on the disputed 2022 governorship poll on Friday, January 27, 2023. This was contained in a letter signed by the Tribunal secretary, David Umar, and pasted on the notice board of the Tribunal sitting at the State High Court, Osogbo, the State capital.  As the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria which restricts the amount of cash that can be withdrawn by customers over the counter and via Automated Teller Machines (ATM) begins nationwide tomorrow, bank branches have been told not to pay the redesigned Naira notes over the counter. A bank staff who confirmed this development said a memo to that effect was issued on Friday, January 6 2023, said they were told to only load the new notes into ATMs and not issue them over the counter. Although the new notes are still scarce with some bank staff confirming that they do not have while those that said they have said they have only a few which is not enough to serve their customers. The memo titled “Urgent Update on Currency Redesign” and signed by the group head, Retail Operation, stated, “The CBN has mandated that we immediately stop the Over-the-Counter payment of the new N200, N500 and N,1000 currency.  The Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress has released a revised campaign timetable indicating that President Muhammadu Buhari would attend the party’s presidential campaign in at least ten states of the federation. In a statement Friday morning, the party’s campaign spokesperson, Festus Keyamo, said Mr Buhari would be available to wave the broom and mobilise voters in Adamawa on 9 January, Yobe on 10 January, Sokoto on 16 January, Kwara on 17 January and Ogun on 25 January. Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry Enugu, Father Ejike Mbaka, on Wednesday, returned to the church ground in Enugu State after months of suspension.
